With nothing to do but fret in his cell, Caru dreamt instead. He dreamt of his empty home back on Nix, of being briefed by the agency about his instrumental task and what he should do if he got caught. Suicide seemed like a silly thought, a cowardly way out, when Caru didn’t even know if his death would mean anything. It should though, shouldn’t it? Ris had been imprisoned with him, and the fate awaiting them probably wasn’t a good one. The Garuda Empire didn’t take chances, and would probably sentence him to death. Ris might be hard to replace, but he, too, was expendable, though it might take years to find his replacement.

Wouldn’t that be a good thing for the Nixan government? Didn’t that mean Caru had fulfilled his task by crippling an evil empire so they could no longer rely on their greatest war machine?

The prospect of Ris and his death didn’t sit well with Caru though. Not after their mating on the Catapult, where both their bodies and souls were bared to each other. Caru realized he refused to die, when he wanted so badly to live, to find out what kind of future he could have with Ris. Besides, didn’t Ris and he deserve some measure of happiness like everyone else?

Caru had fallen into a deep sleep when the sound of glass breaking jolted him awake and a low and urgent voice said, “Caru, you need to get up. We have to leave before more guards are alerted by the noise.”

Ris. His mate was hunkered in front of him, gently shaking his shoulders. Caru didn’t think once he stretched his cramped muscles. He leapt at Ris, nearly making him fall, and placed his arms around his neck to breathe in his scent.

“Easy there, Caru. Didn’t know you’d miss me this much.”

“You bastard, of course I did. Didn’t you say we’re mates and mates stick together?” Caru demanded.

Ris was actually standing in front of him. Alive. Well. Hours ago, he’d imagined the two of them would somehow be subjected to the ultimate torment worse than death—being sentenced to rot in their glass cages, so close yet unable to touch each other.

“Ris, I hate to bring this up again, but we don’t have time,” another man said impatiently, interrupting their reunion.

Caru blinked as Ris helped him up. Two bulky men clad in the Garuda Empire’s military uniform held plasma rifles. Outside the hole of the cell, Caru spied two guards on the floor. Before Caru could ask if Ris knew what he was doing, trusting these two strangers, Ris laid his worries to rest.

“Caru, these men are the only two people in this stinking battleship I trust. The big bastard with the scar is Doto, the redhead is Nik. We survived the empire’s training program together,” Ris said as they made their way out of the prison.

An alarm continued to wail everywhere around the ship, but the three men picked their way through the maze of corridors easily.
